Who we are

Galway Hooker under full sail

The Claddagh Community Boat Club (The Claddagh Boatmen) is dedicated to the restoration and sailing of the traditional Galway work boats known as Galway Hookers. These distinctive boats are an important part of our heritage and we aim to preserve them and bring them back to their full glory as in the days when they plied the routes between the coasts of County Galway and the Aran Islands, transporting turf, seaweed, livestock and other cargo to and from all the coastal villages and towns.

Our aims

Young people viewing restored Galway Hooker

Our aim is to teach young people how to restore the boats, how to sail them and, on the way, instil within Irish youth the importance of their own history and tradition, and its relevance in the modern world. Through our links with Foróige and the Garda Youth Diversion Project, young people from all backgrounds are brought into contact with traditional sailing craft and the skills required to build, maintain and save them. The boats built and restored by Bádóirí an Cladaig will be sailed by crews from such diverse organisations as Galway Sea Scouts, Galway City Sailing School, Galway Fire Station and Galway City Council.

The Claddagh

The Claddagh Boatmen are also involved in the general upkeep of the Marina facilities of the Claddagh area. This is the area in Galway city that has the closest connection with these historic sailing vessels and many of the customs and traditions surrounding the sailing of the Galway Hookers are still alive and well in the Claddagh.
